Sorry for the delay in writing this guys, been pretty busy and as you can imagine this two hour finale took some time to put together. Before I dive into the episode, lets talk first of how they added information to part one of There's No Place Like Home, which they reran at 8pm before the two hour finale at 9pm. There was two different tidbits I caught they added, If I missed anything or anything subsequent in the recap, please set me straight in the comments section. Both new information came during the Oceanic six press conference to the media. A question was asked to Sayid if he had any plans on returning to Iraq, which he answers no (which we know changes after Nadia is murdered and he goes to Iraq to bury her), and more importantly who the other three people are that initially survived the plane crash but later died. I am an idiot, I first guessed Bernard and Rose, but it would have to be three people to survive because Aaron was obviously not born yet. Anyways, the three people are Libby, Boone, and Charlie. Why they picked these three characters, I have absolutely no idea, and I really didn't like how Lost did this whole idea, I felt it was kinda gimmicky to pick up ratings on a rerun, and really didn't make much sense when the next question to Sun in the press conference was did your husband survive the initial plane crash? Don't get me wrong, I loved the finale, those two hours were like a movie, its unbelievable it is actually on television. Yet, this and a few other things that happen that I will get into I really did not like much at all. I know I am getting spoiled, I just expect so much. OK, lets break her down!
Happenings on the Island
Jack and Sawyer finish their trek to the Orchid Station to rescue Hurley and find him peeing in the bushes (thank god he wasn't doing number two huh). This leads to a brief awkward reunion with Hurley and Jack, as Hurley hasn't seen Jack since he decided to follow Locke's leadership. Locke of course is still trying to find the secret elevator to the underground Orchid Station that Ben told him about. Locke wants to talk with Jack, yet Jack has no use for Locke, he only came for Hurley and wants to get them back to the helicopter to get the hell off the island. That plan is thwarted temporarily when Hurley tells Jack that Ben gave himself up to Keamy and the mercenaries, and they are heading back to the helicopter, oops! So with nothing to lose now, Jack and Locke engage in a spirited debate. The debate is obviously centered on man of faith (Locke) versus man of science (Jack). Locke again asks Jack to stay on the island, that he isn't supposed to leave, that it is his destiny. He claims if Jack does indeed leave, that knowledge will eat him up inside. When Locke realizes this attempt to persuade Jack to stay on the island is fruitless, he begs Jack to make up a lie to protect the island. Jack yells it is only an island, yet Locke claims it is a place where miracles happen, and he will see just that.
Meanwhile, Ben is being led to the helicopter by Keamy and Gang. Frustratingly enough, we never learn if Widmore actually ordered Keamy to kill Ben's daughter Alex. They get back to the helicopter just as Kate is running out of the jungle, claiming Ben's people are chasing her. Keamy sends out the mercenaries to investigate, when an all out war breaks out that includes gunfire, grenades, electric darts, oh my. All the mercenaries are killed except for Keamy, who has taken off in pursuit of Kate and Ben who have tried to run off and escape. Keamy is closing in on them, where out of no where Sayid comes flying out of the bushes and takes Keamy down in an amazing form tackle. I will say now Sayid has always been my favorite character he just kicks ass. Sayid is about a foot smaller and 100 lbs lighter then Keamy, but they go head to head in what I can say is not even debatable in the best fight ever in Lost history. They go head to head for what seems like an eternity, until finally Keamy pins Sayid. When all seems lost, ageless Richard coolly pumps three rounds into Keamy's back, as he falls over presumably dead. As one can guess, I really hated this. Who actually thought Keamy was already dead, he has all this war combat gear on, and they don't pump a bullet in his head to be sure? I mean this is Ben, he is supposed to be one the best villains ever, and he gets fooled by the old body armour trick? Ughhhhhh. Anyways Richard then informs Ben that he made a deal with Kate and Sayid, that if they helped free him, they would allow them to leave the island. Ben agrees and says a deal is a deal, that the helicopter is for them to use. Ben then heads to the Orchid Station, where he tells Jack that his people are waiting for him at the helicopter, and the beach gang is being brought to the freighter by the Zodiak raft. Jack basically doesn't know what to think anymore as he watches Locke and Ben descend down the elevation to the Orchid Station. So Jack, Hurley, and Sawyer then head back to the helicopter, where they find Kate, Sayid, and the helicopter pilot Frank Lapidus (who is still handcuffed to the seat by Keamy) and have a quick celebration reunion. Sawyer frees Frank, and they eagerly take off to head to the freighter. The good mood quickly goes out the window though when Frank realizes they are losing fuel fast, it turns out one of the bullets in the cold war pierced the fuel tank. They start throwing out extra weight that is in the freighter, but when that isn't enough Sawyer realizes what he has to do. He first whispers something to Kate, then engages in one of the most passionate kisses ever as Jack's jaw drops to the floor. He then proceeds to jump out of the helicopter, to swim back to the island so they can have more time in the air with a lighter load. This seems to pay off as Hurley sees the freighter and they head to it as quickly as possible.
Freighter Story
Desmond, Michael, and Jin are huddled in the communications room which is wired with all the C-4 explosives. Desmond has some experience with bombs in the Army, but this is just too complicated and it appears hopeless. Michael though has an idea. There is one liquid nitrogen tank on the boat and if they freeze the connections to the battery, this will buy them time if the bomb is indeed activated. The problem is there is only one tank, it only buys them a small amount of time. Meanwhile Faraday got back to the beach from the freighter with the Zodiak Raft, and seems to know that this is gonna be the last trip he is gonna be able to make to get people off the island. He heads to Miles and Charlotte to warn them, but Miles decides he is going to stay. Charlotte at first decides she will go with Faraday, until Miles asks her he is surprised she wants to leave, since she spent all that time trying to get back to the island. Wow, this is a really important clue, I will get back to this at the end. Anyways, Charlotte then informs Faraday that she is going to stay, that she needs to find the place where she was born. Juliet also decides to stay for now, she will catch the next raft, shes made a promise she wants to see everyone off safely first. So Faraday heads back on the Zodiak with five other random Oceanic 815 survivors.
Orchid Station
Locke is passing the time of watching an Orchid Station Video while Ben throws every metallic object he can into this closet called the "vault". In the video, the Dharma Scientist Callawell talks about the unique properties of the island, that allow them to conduct space and time experiments. The vault has negatively exotic charged matter (wow that sounds dirty), and to never put metal in it, which is exactly of course what Ben is doing. All of a sudden, the elevator starts up, someone is coming down, and surprise it's Keamy he isn't dead, what a shock! Anyways, he reveals that indeed the gadget he is wearing on his arm is a heart rate monitor (one I finally nailed)and if his heart stops, the boat will explode. Locke steps out to say he has no conflict with him, and lets talk about it, yet Ben springs out overcome with his desire for revenge of his daughter, stabbing Keamy in the neck. In a shockingly candid moment, Ben admits he doesn't care about who dies on the boat, and it isn't his problem. Keamy does indeed finally die, and the heart monitor goes red triggering the bomb on the boat.
Back on the freighter
The light goes red, but doesn't go off yet because they have frozen the connections to the battery temporarily. The problem is the nitrogen tank is almost empty, meaning in almost 5 minutes boom. Of course at this exact time the helicopter approaches the freighter with the gang, as Desmond warns them that a bomb is on the ship. They have no choice however because they are out of fuel and land the helicopter. Sun wants to find Jin, but Kate intercepts and says she will get him, to take Aaron and get back on the heli. They replug the hole, as Michael tells Jin to get out of there, to get to Sun. It ends out to be too late, as Jack stops Kate and gets her back in the heli, as they have to leave as Jin sprints onto the freighter deck waving hopelessly as Sun has a meltdown in the heli. I will say this, I've never been a huge Sun fan, But I thought her acting in this episode was the best I have seen on Lost, which is really saying alot. She was so powerful, I was really impressed. Anyways, we are cut to the communications room and hear the familiar sound of the whispering again as Michael looks up. It is Jack's dad, telling Michael can go now as the freighter is blown to bits. Sun goes into complete hysterics as Jack tells her Jin is gone. Sawyer finally swims to the beach and finds Juliet chugging a bottle of rum, asking her if she's celebrating, instead she points to the horizon of smoke smoldering from the remains of the boat on the horizon. Sawyer asks if that's the boat, she answers, "was our boat."
Back at the Orchid
Ben has thrown every metallic object into the vault, and tells Locke to duck, as an explosion ripples the vault, creating an opening to a tunnel that leads from it. This is where Ben tells Locke he isn't going to be the one moving the island, it's him. This is because the person who moves the island, can actually never go back to the island. In fact, it is the ultimate sacrifice by Ben. Ben tells Locke to go meet up with Richard and the Others, which Locke does and in the process takes Ben's place, he is the leader now. Ben then proceeds to go down the tunnel, and the down a ladder where it gets surprisingly cold. He falls down the ladder, injuring his arm in the process. This is a clue to where Ben is heading when he moves the island. In the Shape of Things to Come, when he lands in Tunisa in the desert, Ben is wearing the same exact jacket he is now wearing and has an injury to his arm. So at least we know where Ben goes exactly after moving the island. Yet, first he has to move this frozen donkey wheel, setting in motion of moving the island which he accomplishes.
On the Heli
The gang is heading back on the heli when Ben actually moves the island, making the island disappear right in front of them (the sky turns a very similar color to when the hatch exploded remember?), leaving them with no place to land as they are about to run out of fuel. Thank god for Sayid again as he throws out a raft right before they crash, and they all miraculously survive (even the baby, which makes no sense), it was a close call for Desmond as Jack has to perform CPR on him, but he turns out OK. Anyways, they are left drifting in the raft, to when Hurley says I can't believe Locke actually moved the island, to which of course Jack argues with. Finally, they see the lights of a boat, rescue is imminent. This is where Jack convinces them they all must lie. People put a fake plane on the bottom of the ocean, they want us dead, and what will happen to the people we left behind? We need to protect them. So they go along with the plan, as the boat the searcher picks them up. The searcher is Penny's boat, at last a Penny-Desmond reunion. Turns out she was able to track the call he did to her on the freighter to that general area. Well about a week goes by before the boat drops the raft off again off the Indonesian Islands, so the gang can go through with their lie. Desmond stays behind with Penny, as Jack warns him not to let them find you, and to see him in another life. They finally come ashore, thus being "rescued."
Flash-Forwards
The first flash forward picks up exactly where the season three season finale through the looking glass ends. In it, Jack is convincing Kate to go back to the island, and we see what a mess Jack is. Kate says I need to get back to him, which many thought was Sawyer at the time, but is actually Aaron. She reveals Jeremy Bentham paid her a visit, as he visited Jack as well. He told Jack it was the only way to keep Kate and Aaron safe, that he had to get them to go back to the island. We also learn it's about 3 years in the future from the day they escaped the island, as Kate says she has spent the last 3 years trying to forget that horrible day they escaped.
We then see a flash of Walt paying a visit to Hurley at Santa Rosa mental ward. Walt expresses his disappointment none of the Oceanic 6 has visited him in 3 years. He reveals Jeremy visited him as well, and asks Hurley why they are all lying. Hurley responds they are doing it to protect everyone left back on the island.
The next guy to visit Hurley at Santa Rosa is Sayid, but first he has to blow away a guy out front who is spying on Hurley. Sayid tells Hurley he has to come with him, that Bentham is dead, that they made it look like suicide. Hurley asks why they don't call him his real name, which Sayid says because they are still being watched. Hurley then asks if they are going back to the island, no just somewhere safe Sayid answers. Hurley then says good-bye to Mr. Eko, who he is supposedly playing chess with. Yikes!
We then go to London, to where Sun has followed the famous Charles Widmore and confronts him. They dance around some issues before Sun says you know exactly who I am. You know we have been lying and what happened to us, we have common interests and to call her, we aren't the only ones who have left the island. Widmore questions why she would help him, as the flash ends.
Next we see Kate being woken up by a phone call that is all garbled (from what I have read the voice actually demands she comes back to the island, only it is backwards). She then hears something in the house and runs into Aaron's room to find.....Claire! Claire yells at Kate to absolutely not bring Aaron back to the island, as Kate wakes up, it was a dream, or was it?
Finally, we see good old Jack driving around blaring music stoned off his head on oxy. I have to admit i love this Jack, why can't he be like this all the time? Anyways, his destination is the funeral parlor, and presumably it is right after he had the confrontation with Kate. He breaks into the funeral home and lifts the casket, only to be surprised by Ben coming in behind him. Doesn't Ben look like Christopher Walken right here? Anyways Jack admits Bentham told him Ben was now off the island, and he said a few more interesting things. After Jack left the island, bad things happened that were Jack's fault. He wanted Jack to come back to the island. Ben tell him the island wont let him come alone though, that he must come with everyone that left the island. Jack says this is almost impossible, Hurley is crazy, Kate wont talk to him, Sun blames him (could he be the other person she blames for Jin's death), etc. Of course Ben has a few ideas to get them all back, and tells Jack that he has to bring the dead body as well, who we learn is......Locke, oh, my, god.
Notes and Observations
I tried to stick mostly to the recap but here are my thoughts and opinions, which are mostly likely wrong of course.
1) Where the fuck were Bernard and Rose all episode? Other then a brief appearance by Rose telling Miles not to eat their peanuts, i mean cmon I don't get it.
2) Charlotte has been on the island before this. Alot of people think she might be Annie (remember Ben's little gf when they were growing up before he gassed them?).
3) When Sawyer whispered to Kate in the heli, this is probably what Kate was doing when Jack demanded to know where she was in a flash forward a few episodes ago, and she claimed she was doing something for Sawyer. I have a feeling this is about Sawyer's daughter Clementine, maybe he told Kate to look after her?
4)Jack's beard was much less full then it was in the flash forward of season 3, which is the same time frame, i know it's petty, but i noticed it.
5) Remember on the freighter when Sun told Michael she was preggers? Well Lost did these behind the scene mobil-sodes that you can catch on abc.com. they are about 2-3 minutes and reveal stuff that wasn't on the show. Well one of these "sodes" had a thing where it looked like Michael and Sun had it going on in season one....just saying the look on Michael's face at 1st was like, it's not me right?
6)The last thing that pissed me off is Aaron being totally fine during that heli crash....wtf, I mean what is it a miracle baby?
7) I know they gave us a clue that it is indeed Jack as the other person Sun blames for Jin's death, but I am not so sure. I think she actually blames Ben, remember he was the one who killed Keamy, which then set off the explosion. That is why she went to his arch rival. Or she could just be a double agent trying to get Widmore, who the hell knows with this show.
8) Michael is definitely dead to me. Jin I think is very likely dead, although I keep out hope he is still alive. Maybe he could have jumped off the ship, and been rescued by the Zodiak? I know, I know, wishful thinking, but we definitely learn Sun 100% believes that Jin is dead in the future.
9) I can't believe we have to wait to Jan/Feb 09 for it to start back up. It is hard to believe there is only 34 more episodes left (17 in 2009, 17 in 2010), but I will try and post updates on any news in the interim that is relevant. That's all I got, to my favorite Lost season out of the four. Peace.
